Why I broke my pledge
You may have heard me pledge late last year not to buy any clothes until the end of March. Buying clothes is definitely an occupational hazard for me, seeing so many beautiful and ethically made pieces as I do, and being a passionate supporter of local designers.
So I’m sure you can imagine how tempted I constantly am and how my wardrobe can fill quickly! But what I can say is that I choose well; I purchase mindfully. Therefore all my clothes are worn and loved and I do hang onto my clothes for years, and sometimes decades. Also, I give lots away.
Anyway, I’m here to confess that despite having lots of lovely clothes, I realised I had a gap in my wardrobe! Yes, a gap for a modest little item that I believe I have never owned in my entire life. And what could that be..? Well, a little red T-shirt! I suddenly realised that if I had a red T-shirt I would be able to wear it with numerous things in myriad ways. Why it’s never occurred to me to own a red T-shirt, I cannot explain. But there it is.
Now in my opinion, some items are definitely not worth spending a lot of money on, and my red T-shirt was one of them. So when I spied a boy’s small size red T-shirt (that just happened to be brand-new) in an op shop (opportunity shop/charity shop) for $2, I knew it was the one for me!
My general rule of thumb when buying something new is that I should be able to wear it with at least three things I already have. And as it turned out, a red T-shirt can be worn with just about everything I own. Below are just some of the ways I have decided to style my red T-shirt. As I hope you’ll see, it’s quite a versatile little thing.
I promise to do better next time!!
